Etter in nmid 1863 and replaced the Hall Carbine he had been issued in 1862 when he had entered military service in August of the year. He joined Co. I, 1st Missouri Cavalry for a term of three years. He was promoted to Corporal in October of 1863, and mustard out on June 13th 1865. These Sharps Carbines were very popular and continued to see Cavalry service in the Western Campaigns after 1865. When the Civil War ended, many guns such as this, were converted to fire metallic ammunition. In the case of the Sharps, the new 50/70 Government cartridge.
