This is a 1915 dated rifle that was arsenal renumbered to 8355, and still has the old matching numbers on the nosecap, forend, and bolt. The metal retains 80-85% of the arsenal reapplied blue finish that has silvered at the muzzle, on the bearing surfaces of the bolt, as well as along the high edges and projections. The rifle still has the original magazine cut-off, but no volley sights, and the receiver was property marked on the top of the receiver ring: “5th M.D." (5th Military District, Western Command, Western Australia); and a US importer mark is present on the right side of the receiver at the base of the charger guide. The wooden stock and handguards have been arsenal refinished to fine condition and have numerous small handling marks and small surface blemishes throughout. The right side of the buttstock has the rare Lithgow “Kangaroo" cartouche, and matches the newer serial number. A 1918 date and an additional issue stamp are also present: “CMF / 5MD" (Citizen Military Forces / 5th Military District). The brass buttplate has a darker brown-ochre patina and the stock compartment is empty. This is a fine, armory refurbished, WW1 Australian SMLE overall.
