This is a 1906 dated rifle that has about 30-40% of an armory re-applied blue finish which blends smoothly into a predominantly dark plum-brown patina, with silvering at the muzzle and on the high edges and projections. The unnumbered bolt has streaked gray-brown metal with some mild pitting on the bolt knob. The cut-off, sliding charger guide, and magazine match the condition of the rest of the rifle with mostly plum-brown throughout. The original volley sights are still present. The walnut stock and forend are in very good overall condition having numerous minor surface scuffs, small blemishes, and an arsenal repair in the otherwise very nice armory re-applied oil finish (on the right side just below the cut-off). The stock disk is unit marked: “3 10 / ASC / SR B 15" (Army Service Corps). The rifle is accompanied by a period leather sling in fine, serviceable condition, as well as a Pattern 1903 bayonet and scabbard. The blade has some scattered freckling with an overall pewter gray patina, and “’06, ’07, and ’08" surcharges on the ricasso reverse, below the “(Crown) ER" cypher. The hilt retains much of the original blue, and the late pattern leather and steel scabbard is in very good condition overall. These charger loading SMLEs are eagerly sought after, and this example, in very good condition, with unit marks and correct bayonet, would make a great addition to any collection.
