Description:

Antique WHITNEY-BEALS "Walking Beam" .28 Revolver

1 of 850 Produced in Tiny .28 Caliber Percussion

Here we present an antique Whitney-Beals Patent “Walking Beam” Revolver, made circa the late-1850s in Whitneyville, Connecticut. It was nick-named “Walking Beam” after the type of steam engine of the same name to which the complex design bore a vague resemblance. This tiny, 6-shot percussion revolver was just one of 850 made in this small .28 caliber format, making it scarce. Not many more were made in other variants either due to more robust designs. Fordyce Beals was the man responsible for this design, which featured a single action mechanism with a ring trigger that would turn the cylinder and drop the hammer as it was pulled. Once the trigger was pushed forward again, the cylinder would rotate a half chamber. Beals would soon after go to work for Remington on their excellent solid frame “Remington-Beals” percussion Army & Navy revolvers that would be found on Civil War battlefields.

This is an example of the smallest version in the smallest caliber and the shortest barrel. This would have been intended for use as a pocket carry revolver. The top of the solid frame is marked “ADDRESS E. WHITNEY/WHITNEYVILLE CT.” The left side of the frame is marked “PATENT/SEPT. 1854”.

The overall condition is very good. The blued finish is a reapplication. The markings are legible. The serial numbers match, including the grips. The original walnut grips are in great shape. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is fully functional and strong. Here is a very scarce antique percussion revolver.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .28 Percussion
