Description:
The Winchester Model 55 was first offered in June of 1924 to fill the gap between the Model 94 Sporting Rifle and the Model 94 Carbine.  The Model 55 features a 24" inch rapid taper Nickel Steel barrel with an integral machined front sight base, a quick 2-piece take-down design, an under-barrel half-length magazine with a 3 round capacity, and a shotgun-style buttstock with a serrated steel buttplate.  Initially it was only offered in .30 WCF (.30-30 Winchester) but later offered in .32 Winchester Special and .25-35 WCF.  In 1930 Winchester changed the model to a solid frame and no longer offered the take-down design.  There were approx. 20,500 Model 55's manufactured when production ended in 1932.  The Model 55 had it's own serial number range from number 1 thru 12,002 up until 1928, and from that point forward shared serial numbers with the Model 94.  This particular example is serial number 1495 and is a very early 2nd year production gun.  It is a very attractive and all-original gun that has been used but well cared-for since new.  The original factory gloss blue finish on the barrel, magazine tube, hammer, and bolt rates 90%, while the receiver, lever, and remainder of metal parts retain 30% +/- of their original finish.  The finish loss on these parts is quite common, and is a result of the nickel content of the steel preventing good adhesion of the bluing.  The bore in this Model 55 is excellent and mirror-bright.  The rifling still looks sharp and clean throughout, and there is no visible erosion, pitting, or imperfections of any kind.  As you can see from the pictures, the original screw heads on the receiver of this Winchester are for the most part unmolested and in very good condition, and the original factory iron sights are complete and in excellent condition.  The original smooth American Walnut stock set is in very good condition on this rifle.  Both the forearm and buttstock are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  Both parts match each other perfectly, have the original hardware intact, and show only minor wear and handling marks consistent with the rest of the rifle.  The action on this Model 55 is slick and tight, and in perfect working order.  The rifle takes down quickly just as it was designed to by lifting the magazine lever and screwing it out several turns, and then twisting the barrel assembly 90 degrees to remove them.  It goes back together quickly and flawlessly as well, and there is zero slop between the two halves.  There are no extra holes or modifications done to this Winchester, it is in the same exact configuration it left the factory in.  This rifle should shoot just as accurately and reliably today as it did when it left the factory 95 years ago.  If you have been looking for one of these lessor-known Winchester's for your collection that is all-original, handsome, and fully functional that you can enjoy as an investment and occasional shooter, this is it!
