This was the primary sidearm for the British Army during the Great War and it came with a great reputation. This is a large frame revolver that chambered the large .455 Webley, which was a true manstopper in its day. Shortly after WWI, the military would move away from the .455 in favor of a smaller revolver in .38 S&W, but these would remain in service as late as World War II. This one bears the name “R.G. Phillipes” and the year date “16” scrawled in cursive on the bottom of the right grip panel, while on the bottom of the left grip panel is inscribed “BRECKNOCKS”. Phillipes is indeed an old Welsh surname, spelled a number of different ways and Brecknock is a county in Wales. The rest of the revolver is view and proof marked throughout, with multiple British government acceptance marks as well. Some of the markings are year dated “15”. The overall condition is near fine. Traces of the original finish remain with a gray patina throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The numbers match. The grips are in great shape. The bore is excellent; bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a wonderfully preserved British Webley in .455 from the Great War with soldier provenance!
