Description:

ENGLISH Antique PEPPERBOX Pinfire Revolver

London Marked in Gorgeous Burl Case

Here we present an antique Pepperbox Pinfire Revolver, made circa 1860 in England. This small revolver was designed to be used for concealable self-defense in the last half of the 19th Century.

The pinfire cartridge was one of the very first successful metallic, self-contained cartridges in history. It was invented in Paris by Frenchman Casimir Lefaucheux, and he was granted a patent in the mid-1830s. This predates the invention of rimfire by about 10 years. Aside from being first, the pinfire cartridge was not primed on the back of the cartridge, but had a pin (basically a firing pin) projecting out of the side of the cartridge. Thus, the revolvers made for this early cartridge had flat hammers that struck the cylinder and cartridge from the top, as the pin would project out of a small hole in the cylinder. The first revolver to shoot these ingenious cartridges was Casimir’s son Eugene Gabriel Lefaucheux in 1854.

This revolver is very similar in form and concept to the Meyers Brevete revolver, though, instead of having a loading gate, this revolver is loaded and unloaded by swinging the front of the frame down and taking the cylinder straight off of the cylinder axis pin. The frame is marked “LONDON” and “Patent No. 38392”. The cylinder bears British proof marks. This revolver comes in a very nice burl case with gorgeous grain. A small screwdriver, oiler and rod complete the display.

The overall condition of the piece is fine. Significant blue finish covers the exterior of the gun, especially dark in the flutes. The markings are clear and legible. The wood grips are finely checkered and are in fine condition. The bores are smooth and clean. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2 inches in length.

Caliber: .28 Pinfire

The bore is fine and the action is strong.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a very nice English Pepperbox Revolver in a gorgeous case!
