Description:
Antique COLT 1848 BABY DRAGOON “Pocket” Revolver

Scarce Revolver Made 1848 w ANTIQUE IVORY GRIPS!

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon revolver, made in 1848, in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1848 was Colt’s first pocket-sized revolver and was a smaller version of the .44 Dragoon models. It was the precursor of the 1849 Pocket Revolver with the stylings and cylinder scene of its big brother, the Colt’s Dragoon. This is a desirable pistol for many reason, not the least of which is the name of “Colt” and “Dragoon”. This pistol was made in a small quantity from 1847-1850, about 15,000. The Baby Dragoon was chambered in .31 percussion and had a capacity of 5 shots. Though these were very limited in number, they were very popular and saw use during the Gold Rush days as well as the Civil War.

This Baby Dragoon features a square-back trigger guard that was an early feature to be phased out in favor of a rounded trigger guard as seen on the Model 1849 Pocket. The cylinder features the round cylinder stops and the faint Indian & Ranger cylinder scene. The barrel has the two-line New York address book-ended by decorative finials. The brass was finished in silver. The grips are antique ivory. This revolver has a loading lever that appears to be made during the period but is slightly cruder than what the Colt factory would have put on their revolvers. A neat and early example of such!

The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a gray patina. Strong traces of the silver finish remain on the trigger guard. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The bore is in good shape with nice rifling. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3 inches.

Caliber: .31

Overall condition as seen in photos.
