Antique SMITH & WESSON “BABY RUSSION” Revolver
With Mother of Pearl Grips and Holster!
Here we present an antique 1st Model Smith & Wesson .38 S&W Single Action Revolver A.K.A. the Baby Russian, made circa 1876 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Single Action Baby Russian (so-called for its resemblance to the .44 caliber S&W revolver made for the Russians) filled a gap for Smith & Wesson, providing their customers an option in .38 caliber. Prior to this, S&W had smaller caliber lines in .22 and .32 caliber, and larger lines of .44 and .45 caliber handguns, but none in what some might call a medium sized cartridge such as .38. This was their first revolver chambered in .38 S&W, which turned out to be a favorite for police, the armed public, and even the British military for decades to come. This example is exquisite with its sleek design, nickel finish, mother of pearl grips, and the golden S&W trademark inset into the grips. It also comes with a fine leather flap belt holster.
The overall condition is very fine. The original nickel finish is 98%. The case colors are visible and mostly silvered. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The trademarked mother of pearl grips are in fine shape. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is flawless. Here is a truly superior example of the first .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, the Baby Russian!
