1850s LIVERPOOL Antique WILSON DERINGER PISTOL
BIG BORE .54 Caliber British Self Defense Pistol!
Here we present an antique Wilson & Company Deringer Style Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1850s in Liverpool, England. This pistol has a massive .54 caliber smooth bore that would have been potent medicine on the streets of 19th Century Liverpool, England. This pistol is very similar in concept to the American design by Henry Deringer: a large bore, single shot, percussion pistol with a full wooden stock, a back action lock, and handsome décor. This pistol would have been carried in a coat pocket or a small belt holster. There was no need for a rifled barrel at the distances this pistol would be best deployed, and a smooth bore would have made loading a little easier.
The lock is marked “WILSON & Co.” on the lock and “LIVERPOOL” on the top of the barrel. The top of the grip bears a decorative thumb plate or initial placard. The rest of the hardware is of iron. The lock, hammer, barrel tang, barrel, trigger guard and finial are all nicely engraved.
The overall condition is fine. The iron parts have an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The stock shows that this gun was used yet remains smooth and solid. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
