Description:

Richardson & Overman GALLAGER .52 Spencer Carbine

Marked with the Name “G. VICE”

Here we present an antique Civil War Richardson & Overman Gallager Patent .52 Spencer Carbine manufactured March-May 1865 in Philadelphia. Only around 5,000 of these cartridge carbines were produced for a US contract near the end of the war. This carbine was invented by South Carolina native Mahlon Gallager, who licensed the design to Richardson and Overman of Philadelphia for production. On August 31, 1861, the first Gallager was sold to the U.S. Army. 22,728 Gallager carbines were purchased during the Civil War and saw extensive use as a cavalry arm with the Union troops. Both percussion and metallic cartridge versions of the Gallager carbine were manufactured. When the trigger guard lever is lowered, the barrel slides out from the frame and tips downward to receive the cartridge. The Gallager carbine was known to be used by the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Ohio, the 13th Tennessee and the 3rd West Virginia cavalries.

At least half of the later cartridge carbine contract was sold as surplus and were purchased by France for the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). This example has a pinched blade front sight, folding leaf rear sight, a pair of cartouches on the left stock flat by the saddle ring and bar, a smooth oil finished walnut stock with iron patch box, and a crescent buttplate. The top of the barrel has a "J.M.D" inspector's mark. The back action lock plate has the three line Richardson & Overman address over the serial number just behind the hammer and the two line Gallager patent marking on the lower part of the tail. It is also marked “G. VICE” in block letters on each side of the butt stock and inside the patchbox. Research shows that there are 3 good possibilities for a G. Vice in the Union Cavalry during the war. All are George Vices belonging to the 22nd Regiment, New York Cavalry; 1st Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry; and the 27th Regiment, Missouri Mounted Infantry.

The overall condition is near fine. The original blued finish is about 20%. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in great shape. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic carbine adopted, produced and delivered just before the war ended.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 3/8 inches.
