Description: Serial #900, .577 Snider, 30 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This handsome rifle has an 1872 dated, “VR" cyphered BSA lock and “III" marked receiver. About 70-75% of the original browning remains on the barrel (mostly at the breech, and towards the muzzle), with pleasant streaks of gray and dark plum-brown on the balance. Furthermore, there is mild silvering at the muzzle, and edges of the bayonet stud, and a smooth blue-brown patina on the lock and receiver. The trigger guard, stock furniture, and nosecap have a matching blue-gray-brown patina with some darker freckling on the nosecap and buttplate. The walnut stock has been armory refinished to very good-fine condition with minor handling marks and surface blemishes in the thick, but excellent oil finish. The War Department cartouche is crisp and clear on the right side of the butt, while the left has clear “DC / 2HGA / 197" property and issue markings (Dominion of Canada / 2nd Halifax Garrison Artillery / Rifle #197). An iron ramrod is included as is an original chain-mounted firing pin protector (missing the leather bumper) and original woven linen sling. This is an excellent, and hard to find, Canadian unit marked Snider Short Rifle, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
