Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique AMES M1860 Light Cavalry Saber

Desirable Ames Manufacture Dated 1865

Here we present an antique Civil War Ames 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured circa 1865 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The 1860 was a lighter and nimbler successor to the 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. The M1860 went on to be used by cavalry during the Indian Wars and even in the Spanish-American War. The Ames Mfg. Company alone produced 200,000 of these swords, with other contractors fulfilling several tens of thousands each.

The overall condition is very good. The brass guard shows an aged patina. The leather and braided wire wrap remains tight and whole with a few thin spots from wear. The right side of the Ricasso is dated “1863”. There are inspection marks “D.R.” for inspector Daniel Reynolds on the pommel and the ricasso. The blade is bright. The steel scabbard has a nickel plate finish and has a few dents. This is a great Civil War cavalry saber for your collection!
