Description:
SALE PENDING Wm R Schaefer 12 gauge SxS shotgun.  Boston based William R Schaefer was a retailer, similar to Charles Daly, who sold Claborough guns and other imported shotguns from England and Continental Europe. Schaefer was also known to be an accomplished rifle shooter and a rifle maker.  This shotgun is marked "Wm R Schaefer Boston" while most of his known products were marked "Wm R Schaefer & Son" after 1883 so we can assume that this gun was sold before that date!  Birmingham proofed barrels and action indicate that this gun is indeed an English made imported by Schaefer. Damascus 28” barrels with a right bore of .725 and a left bore of .720, both bright and smooth.  Wall thicknesses are .032” & .038” respectively..very ample walls.  No choke constriction in either barrel.

Unlike many of few known examples of Schaefer guns this one is profusely engraved and finely detailed. The frame has 90% coverage of scroll and an assortment of tasteful borders.  The engraving extends to the breech section of the barrels and all of the way down the long bottom stock tang. Handsome walnut straight grip butt stock is nicely checkered, masterfully fit to the frame and has engraved steel heel and toe plates with a checkered mid section.  The forearm is securely attached with a cross pin.

Double triggers, non-rebounding hammers and extractors all in excellent working order.  Without the forearm in place the barrels are slightly off face, but when the forearm is attached the barrels are snug.

Cosmetically the metal finishes have faded to a fine gray.  Good Damascus pattern is visible on all of the barrel surface.  No pitting or oxidation to be found.

Stock dimensions:  14” LOP, about a 2 ½” DAC and about a 3 ½” DAH. Weighs 7 lbs. 4 oz.  With the gun is what appears to be the original maker’s luggage case complete with an assortment or period B G I co. loading tools and cleaning rod.  Maybe the only case to exist with the Schaefer label!!

Great looking, roughly 136 year old gun that is ready for your next vintage shoot.
