Description:
If you fancy firearms bequeathed in US History, you'll fall in love with this one. Gun remains, spectacular. Winchester 1866 Deluxe, chambered for 45-70, has a 1/2 octagon, 1/2 round 25 1/2" barrel, pistol grip, stunning checkered stock, 1/2 magazine, plain trigger, and a rubber butt plate. The letter from the Cody Firearms Museum, states that the rifle was received and shipped in the warehouse, on July 20, 1895. There is also an order number.
The original owner of the rifle was Herbert Shipman, an Episcopal Bishop. He is the man who wrote the 2nd most important song, sung at the United States Military Academy. That song is titled, "The Corps", and is typically sung by the West Point Choir at graduation. He gave the rifle to his grandson, Paul Shipman Andrews. Paul graduated from Yale in 1909, and Columbia Law in 1912. In 1917, he enlisted in the Field Artillery of the US Army, and served in the American Expeditionary Force in France as a captain. He returned to Syracuse to practice law. In 1937, he became dean of the Syracuse University College of Law.
The Winchester was sent to The American Committee for Defense of British Homes at 10 Warren Street, New York, NY, which loaned firearms to the citizens of England, for protection from German invasion. Paul Andrews figured the rifle was of more use to England, for the time being. Now know as Dean Andrews around Syracuse, he promplty took leave of absence from the law school to re-enlist in the Army for war-time duty, at the age of 55.
We have the original tag from the American Committee for Defense of British Homes, with serial number in writing, and the Tag of Return as well. The Tag of Return is addressed to Reverend Nigel Andrews, son of Paul and Hannah Andrews, who served in WW2 in Army Air Transport Command, and like his father, attained the rank of captain. Yes, he AND his father served in WW2. Amazing. Also included is a large wall plaque, showing the tags, Herbert Shipman's photo, Paul Andrews college, professional, and military history, and a short history of the American Committee for Defense of British Homes.
