Displaying a lovely active hamon, with only traces of micro-pitting(not visible to the naked eye), the unsigned tang is the single-hole variety and the saya is of wood, remaining good despite a few drying cracks. Fitted with an old, rayskin covered handle that is wrapped with lacquered cloth, the lacquering has worn away on the grip, the handle is a nice match, although the peg should be replaced as there is a slight play between the blade and grip, and the furniture(copper habaki & plain iron tsuba) are early 20th Century replacements. Undoubtedly a family heirloom that was passed down, reconditioned, and sent to war with a Japanese officer or soldier during the Second World War, this short Samurai sword is a fine candidate for having been brought back by an American GI during the war or following its conclusion. A superb find for any WWII or Japanese arms enthusiast, this antique Japanese Wakizashi & scabbard would be an excellent addition to any complete collection. SOLD |
