My interests are Winchester rifles in models 1892 and 1894 especially with shorter than standard barrels. I have also written four books on Newton rifles and have interest in all models of those rifles. newtonrifles Description: This is an interesting rifle that supports the history of the First Model 1916 Newton rifle. It is a mixed number rifle with four different serial numbers on various parts. It is always possible that a gunsmith made up this rifle from serveral Newton rifles although it would be unusual for someone to have access to so many different serial numbered parts. This Model 1916 was most probably assembled by the Receiver after Newton lost the factory, Newton Arms Corporation or Kirtland Bros Hardware. The facts that support this are the number 2246 on the stock, under the grip cap, the rear tang and the but plate. Sometime before August 15, 1919, Newton made up a special order rifle and presented it to O.H. Elliot, a man who sold over a hundred rifles for the Newton firm and a personal friend of Newton. That rifle is stamped on the receiver "PRESENTED TO O.H. ELLIOT -8-15-1919- BY CHARLES NEWTON". It has a rosewood stock fitted to it and was receiver number 2246. The stock, grip cap and butplate on the rifle above were apparently set aside and used at a later date to assemble this rifle receiver number 1796. This rifle is numbered 1796 on the receiver, bolt and bolt sleeve. Number 2654 is on the on the floor plate and trigger guard.  The buttplate is double stamped 2246 and 1619. Notice that matching numbers are on adjoining parts of the rifle. This rifle has a single trigger with the set trigger removed. The stock finish is very good and the stock has a crack shown in the pictures. The buttplate has 85% blue, grip cap 95%, floor plate 95%, trigger guard 90%, receiver 95% and is not tapped, bolt handle and bolt 85% and the barrel with the original sights and strong rifling in a good bore 85% blue. The PATEND PENDING marking on the barrel indicates a later barrel than the receiver serial number would probably have. This is a nice example of a Newton rifle that supports an interesting part of Newton history even though it has mixed numbers. Buyer pays actual shipping costs.
