Description:
This is a very nice all-original antique Kentucky / Pennsylvania rilfe made by a well-known gunmaker, John Moll of Allentown, Pa. circa 1830-1840.  It is a beautiful rifle and really unique in that it is .56 caliber, a very large caliber for a rifle like this.  This cap and ball rifle has a full length stock with a barrel 38.75" inches long with an overall length of 54.25" inches.  The barrel is marked with the maker's name "Moll" and is octagon in shape.  The original sights are still in their original locations and are in good condition.  The lock is nicely fit to the rifle and is likely a Philadelphia-mfg. piece used by Moll.  The only word we can make out stamped on the lock is "Warranted".  The lock still cocks to full-cock and the trigger is still functional.  Opposite the lock there is a round brass fitting for the lock screw at the forward end, and an elegantly-shaped brass inlay that looks like wings for the other lock screw.  The curly Maple stock, patch box, and brass work on this Moll rifle is really attractive.  Every piece of brass on this rifle was hand shaped, fit, and embellished in some way.  The patch box has a very elegant but simple design, with the door release located on the buttplate.  The crescent buttplate itself wraps over the heel in 1-piece, while the toe and the bottom of the butt is protected by a seperate brass plate that is lightly engraved.  On the left side of the buttstock there is a nicely carved small cheekpiece, just below an inlaid brass star.  The brass triggerguard for the single trigger assembly has a very nicely shaped tang which is perfectly fit to the contour of the wood.  Ahead of the triggerguard there is a nicely engraved brass oval before the 3 brass ramrod hangers nicely spaced to the end of the forearm at the muzzle, where the end of the stock is covered with a brass cap.  As mentioned earlier, this Moll rifle is .56 caliber.  A rifle in such a large caliber would have been built for hunting large game and protection from bandits and indians.  At over 180 years old, this rifle has no doubt witnessed some amazing history. This John Moll rifle would be an excellent addition to any Kentucky rifle collection, and would also make a beautiful decorator hung over a fireplace in a living room, library, etc.
