Description: SOLD... This gun is still available. My customer wants a different gun I have so he traded this one back in... Antique 1873 Winchester 38-40 caliber. This is a pretty nice 1873 Winchester. It is in the best shooting caliber 38-40. Has the standard 24” octagon barrel. S/N 367938 and was made in very early part of 1891. The bore is very nice. Show strong and sharp rifling all the way through. Has some very minor black powder roughness as usual but no big pits or craters. NO rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. This gun shoots great and is still very accurate. No bulged cases or backed out primers. The head space is perfect. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive, Has the original front sight but the rear sight is a new replacement from something?? { see photo }.. The markings are all very good. Still has the original dust cover that is a little loose as most are but still retracts with the lever throw. The gun has no finish remaining and is a smooth dark gray to light brown patina. No pitting on the gun. The screws for the most part are all sharp and not burred up. One forearm cap screw and the lever spring screw show some turning. All are serviceable. The wood is nice looking and still has great color and no oil soaking. The forearm fits tight and even with the metal. NO cracks or splits with just normal light dings and scratches. Never sanded on or messed with. The butt stock has an issue. It has some initials on the left side as you can see in the close up photo...??? They have been stamped in and not carved in. They look like they have been there for quite a while. It also has a very old gouge on the right side as you can see. The stock shows some minor normal dings and scratches but no splits or cracks. It fits perfect and very tight to the metal. Still fits proud to the receiver and at the lower tang. Fits perfectly even at the upper tang. NO gaps or splinters. Does not look like it has ever been cleaned on or messed with. Still has great Winchester color and not dark or oil soaked. This is a most honest 73 besides the rear sight. Shows some use but not beat up and abused. This would make someone and excellent shooter or an entry collector at a reasonable price. Getting harder to find these with good bores that I can sell much below the $2000 mark these days. I love these 38-40's as they still shoot like new even with less than minty perfect bores.. They will out shoot the 44-40's all day with the same bore condition. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping here in the USA. Don't miss this one as I get a lot of calls after the gun has sold...... SOLD Antique: Yes |
