Description:

SAN FRAN Antique HOPKINS & ALLEN XL 4 Revolver

LIDDLE & KAEDING of San Fran Marked w IVORIES!

Here we present an antique Hopkins & Allen XL No. 4 Spur Trigger Revolver, Retailer Marked by Liddle & Kaeding, made in Norwich, Connecticut circa the 1870s-1880s. This revolver features 5 shots of .38 Rimfire and is marked "HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG. Co./PAT. MAR. 28. 71" on the left side of the barrel and "LIDDLE & KAEDING/XL No. 4/SAN FRANSISCO.CAL” on the top of the frame. This one is a bit ornate for a typical Hopkins & Allen revolver. This XL No. 4 features factory engraving, original ivories on the bird’s head grip and a nickel plated finish. The engraving is a bit earlier in style but similar to the revolvers Hopkins & Allen produced for Merwin Hulbert and Co. during the 1880's. Hopkins and Allen produced dozens of pocket model revolvers, many not even marked with the company's name. While Colt and S&W owned the top end of the American market, H&A seemed focused on making their products within reach of the working man. Thus, it's a little unusual to see one of these with fancy grips and engraving. Most of their best work was reserved for Merwin Hulbert & Co., whose revolvers they manufactured under contract. That's essentially what this XL No. 4 compares best with.

Liddle & Kaeding first began when Robert Liddle and Charles van Buren Kaeding purchased the Bogart Brothers Sportsmen's Emporium in San Francisco, California, in 1859. The firm was initially known as R. Liddle & Co., but became Liddle & Kaeding in 1866. They were the largest firearms dealers in the Bay Area in the 1870s.

The overall condition is near fine. Strong traces of nickel finish remain. The markings are clear. The antique ivory grips are in great shape. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic piece of San Francisco history!

This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2 inches.

Caliber: .38 Rimfire
