WILLIAM HOLLIS Single Barrel FLINTLOCK Shotgun
Nicely Engraved Early 19th Century British Shotgun
Here we present an antique William Hollis Single Barrel Flintlock Shotgun, manufactured in Birmingham, England circa 1816. Records show that William Hollis ran his business on Bath Street in Birmingham from 1814 through 1818. Though not known for sure, it is believed that the more famous Birmingham gunmaker Isaac Hollis descended from William Hollis.
The lock is marked “WILLm HOLLIS”. The top of the barrel is marked “BATH STREET BIRMINGHAM”. There are nice engravings throughout this shotgun along with gold bands, features that make this a step above the average hunting gun of the day. The stock has a straight grip with a trigger guard that forms a pistol grip. The trigger guard is round at the back and square at the front as well as oversized, making it ideal for use with gloves.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts are bright. The markings are clear. The stock is mostly smooth and solid. It does have the handling marks you would expect, along with a stable crack on the underside just forward of the trigger guard. The bore is smooth and clean, semi-bright. The action is excellent.
