Description: The Model 36, or as it was originally known, the Chief’s Special is one of the most influential revolvers in history. Many modern conceal carry revolvers have some relation to or take inspiration from this firearm. The Chief’s Special introduced the S&W J-frame onto the market as well the .38 Special chambered in revolvers small enough to be carried concealed. Previously, the only revolver small enough to chamber the .38 Special were the larger S&W K-frame models and Colt’s Official Police. Their size made concealment somewhat difficult. The J-frame was essentially a larger version of the I-frame which normally was chambered for the .22 LR, .32 S&W Long, and .38 S&W Short. Smith and Wesson modified the I-frame design to be longer and taller (the latter because of the use of a coiled mainspring rather than a coiled leaf spring) in order to fit the .38 Special. The Chief’s Special and the new frame design were such a success that S&W upgraded their I-frame models to the newer J-frame. The Chief’s Special was introduced in 1950 and was renamed as the Model 36 in 1957. It has spawned many variations, including the Model 37, 38, 40, 42, 50, 442, 637, 642, and others. The Model 36 shown was, according to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th Ed., produced sometime after 1962 but before 1969. It has the flared flat cylinder latch found on many Smith & Wesson revolvers made at that time. While most Chief’s Special/Model 36 revolvers have a 2-inch barrel as standard, this one comes with 3-inch barrel, which while not rare, is more desirable than the 2-inch because the improved accuracy, slightly reduced muzzle flash (less unburned powder), and slightly improved ballistics. The revolver is in excellent condition. The bore is bright with clear rifling. The finish is in 98-99% condition in both the bluing and the color case hardening on the trigger. The grips are checkered walnut with S&W medallions. This Model 36 would make a nice addition to any S&W collection.
