Description:

“DC” BRITISH B.S.A. Co. MKI** Snider Enfield Rifle

London Armory Co. Marked & Dated 1861

Here we present an antique B.S.A. Co. MKI** Snider Enfield Rifle, originally made in 1861 before being updated via the Snider system circa 1868. The British military, like many militaries of the day, was in the process of updating its arsenal from single shot percussion muskets to breech-loading cartridge rifles. Rather than retire all their existing muskets at once and choosing a completely new platform the government opted to adopt and install a breech-loading conversion. The result was still a large bore, single shot rifle, but it could be loaded much more quickly and efficiently than ramming a ball down from the front. They went on to see use throughout the world in colonies and commonwealth.

This one served in Canada as can be noted from the “DC” (Dominion of Canada) marking within a diamond on the left side of the butt stock. The round marking on the right side of the stock read “LONDON ARMORY CO. 1860”. The lock is marked “ENFIELD” and dated “1861” with Queen Victoria’s royal cipher of a crown over “V.R.” for Victoria Regina. The breech block is marked “B.S.A.&Co.” for Birmingham Small Arms. The rifle is littered with proof, inspection and acceptance marks. This rifle would have been in use in Canada as the Canadian Confederation grew, the Canadian transcontinental railroad was built, the North West Mounted Police (Royal Canadian Mounted Police today), and even a couple of rebellions (Red River & North West)!

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in very good condition. The bore is dark. The action is excellent. Here is a very neat rifle that would have been the Canadian counterpart to the US trapdoor rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 36-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .577 Snider

Overall condition as seen in photos.
