SCARCE Antique COLT Model 1878 SxS Hammer SHOTGUN
10 Gauge Made in 1885 with Damascus Barrels!
Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel 10 Gauge Hammer Shotgun, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1885. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parkers. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. Manufactured from 1878-1889, the Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special-order item. This double trigger shotgun is a 10-gauge solid rib with 32 inch tubes. The length of pull is 14 inches with 3" chambers and cylinder chokes.
According to one source, “the Model 1878 Hammer Gun ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1878 series.”
The overall condition is good. The iron parts are gray throughout. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock has a repair at the top frame tang. Otherwise, the stock is smooth and solid. The bores are semi-bright with light texture throughout. The actions are strong and crisp.
