SWISS Antique SCHUETZEN Percussion TARGET RIFLE
Made by Dubourg of Vevey, Switzerland!
Here we present an antique Schuetzen Percussion Target Rifle by Dubourg of Vevey, made circa 1870 in Switzerland. Vevey is a town in the canton of Vaud, on the north shore of Lake Geneve, near Lausanne. This rifle was made for offhand shooting and features the distinctive Swiss stock with a curving pistol grip transitioning to a large butt stock that envelopes the shoulder around a deep plate. There is a palm rest forward of the trigger guard. The grip is sharply checkered. The sights are fine and adjustable, ideal for longer range shooting. The barrel is 36-inches long and octagonal with a massive rifled .61 caliber bore. The barrel is Liege proofed and was likely made in Belgium and the rest of the rifle built in Vevey.
There is a name plate on the left stock flat inscribed “Léon Bidlingmeyer”. This gentleman is found to have been active as a notary in Lausanne circa 1862-1871.
The overall condition is good. The twist pattern on the barrel remains strong, as are the case colors and blue accents. The markings are clear. The stock is in good shape with an old split on the left side. The bore is in very good condition, dim with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. The set trigger is present, but the front trigger is absent and would need to be fabricated and attached.
