Description:
At the onset of World War 1, and especially after trench warfare commenced, the British Army realized they did not have enough Webley Mk. VI revolvers to suit the requirement. Many European nations considered the pistol a badge of office for officers to be issued while regular enlisted men had to make do with their rifles. Of course, in the trenches the rifles used many of the participating nations would be all but unusable due to the limited amount of room to maneuver. Hence, pistols were needed quickly. The British purchased many Colt New Service and Smith & Wesson New Century revolvers, all in the British .455 Webley caliber, though in general the revolvers of both manufacturers were marked .455 Eley. Ammunition marked as either will work in the other’s marked revolvers. However, not all Colt or S&W revolvers were military issue. It was common for a newly commissioned officer’s family to purchase them a pistol as a gift. In some cases, these pistols were engraved with the intended recipient’s initials. Such is the case here with the backstrap being engraved with the initials “E.J.H.”. Unfortunately, there is no paperwork with the revolver to indicate who E.J.H. was. The pistol itself is in good condition given its age (105 years old as of 2019). The finish has worn away in few places, mainly the grip portion of the frame and the barrel. There are some scratches on the rear right side of the frame. The bore is in fair condition with what appears to be a minor pitting or copper fowling. I have a fair amount of experience with pitting in the bore of a pistol having a Colt Police Positive (.32 Long), Ruger Super Blackhawk (.44 Mag), and a 1930s Mauser Broomhandle (7.63 Mauser) – all with varying degrees of pitting (fortunately the Mauser is the least pitted). Taking experience with those three alone I would consider this New Service to be in perfectly shootable condition with good accuracy, especially given the 455 Webley’s low operating pressure. Interestingly enough, the butt swivel for the attachment of a lanyard loop is still present. Normally, when they find their way onto the civilian market, the butt swivel is usually removed, and the hole plugged. This New Service would make an interesting addition to any Colt collection.
