The Model 19 started production in 1955 under the name Combat Magnum and was given model number 19 in 1957 and continued in production under that designation until 1999. A newer, “Classics” version was released later. The 19 was produced in 2.5-inch, 3-inch (rare), 4-inch, 5-inch (rare), and 6-inch variations, with the first having a round butt and the latter four with a square butt. This 19-5 features the snub-nose 6-inch barrel, a Patridge front sight, micrometer click rear sight, round butt grips, .265-inch grooved service trigger, .375” semi-target hammer, and a 10-groove forestrap and backstrap. The Model 19 was designed to allow police officers to practice with the handgun using the 38 Special and carry it with the 357 Magnum in a handgun lighter than the larger N-frame Model 27. That the revolver fulfilled its intended role well has been well recorded in the annals of law enforcement history. The Model 19 is one of the more fondly remembered revolvers from the 50’s-80’s. They have been used by such agencies as the Secret Service, FBI, several state highway patrols, and the Naval Investigative Service (NIS, predecessor to the famous NCIS). The finish has some wear at the tip of the barrel. There is one odd, very small spot of bluing loss on the side plate. The grips exhibit very little wear. The bore however looks to be in excellent condition. There are no signs of powder residue there or even on the front of the cylinder. There is miniscule pitting on the back strap and bottom of the trigger guard. The 19’s serial number indicates year of production as 1983. This Model 19-5 would be an excellent self-defense handgun or a nice addition to the collection of any Smith & Wesson enthusiast.
