Description:
Sale Pending! I found this little British Bull Dog at at the Allentown show this summer. Circa early 1870's with a non-fluted cylinder.  It's a pretty decent example and what drew me to it was the "BRITISH BULL DOG" on the top of the frame is hand-engraved in large font rather than stamped.  Although its hard to see, it has a little bit of original blue left on it.  The photos do not do it justice as the gun in person has a smooth brown patina with some scattered patches of original blue in the protected areas of the frame and even a little on the barrel.  When I found it, it has a lot of light closet rust which I was able to carefully remove but had put a coat of oil on it while was finishing up and then photographed it. It's a much smoother gun with more blue than what you'll see in these images so whoever ends up with it is going to be pleasantly surprised how much better it is in person.  The left side of the frame is marked JOINT PATENT over STANTON & CO over a serial number.  The barrel and chambers are English Proofed...Birmingham Proofs to be exact.  Cylinder is 5 shot and the barrel is oval/round that flattens out to a sighting rib on the top of the barrel.  Barrel is 2 1/2" Long.  Double Action design with a rebounding hammer and concentric ejector/cylinder pin design which swivels to the right to eject the spent casing via a loading gate behind the cylinder.  The grips are birdshead with checkered walnut.  Nicely made and very stout little design.  I have no idea what the caliber is but its a centerfire cartridge that should measure around 1 3/8" in length and my bore gauge reads .42" in diameter.  It might be .44 Webley as I've seen a few comments online with owners mentioning similar bore size...but that is just a guess.  The action was pretty stiff when I found it but since putting a little oil in it, it has livened up considerably and now functions in both single and double action pretty well.  If someone disassembled it properly, it would improve further.  The bore and chambers look very good with strong rifling and minimal pitting.  The screws are in decent shape and knurling on the hammer and loading gate respectable.  The only thing I can find that's missing is a tiny set screw in the cylinder swing-out arm that's supposed to keep the ejector rod from being removed completely when using it to unload.  My guess is the little screw might have been removed so the ejector rod could be used to poke out the spent shell casings a little faster.  The hollow cylinder pin has a long leaf spring to keep it from falling out when its put back into the gun.  Not a big deal at all but I'm trying to be thorough.  The checkered grips are in very good shape with sharp checkering, nice fit to the metal, and no chips or cracks.  Nice untouched looking little English Double Action Pocket Revolver.  This little gun looks like it packed a punch in a larger caliber and is smaller than a Colt Lightning.  I understand these Bulldogs were fairly popular in the American West.
