This early German long gun is dated 1698 on the lockplate and is fitted with a 40 inch smooth bore barrel. The Welin family, located in Stuttgart, was active in the manufacture of firearms throughout the 17th Century. Matthaus Welin was the most recognized of the family, and he most likely made this flintlock in 1698. The style and architecture show a strong German influence, resembling the shorter Jaeger hunting rifles of the period, but also shows the transition to the longer barrel length that developed in America in the 17th Century. The gun appears in excellent original condition and has undoubtably been well cared for by previous owners. It does have a professional repair in the forearm, which is only barely decernible, but no cracks or significant corrosion the the metal parts. While many long guns similar to this were carried by early hunters and volunteer militiamen in the northeast prior to, and during the Revelutuionary War, very few have survived in this condition until the present day.
