Description:
SCARCE U.S. Model 1803 FLINTLOCK by HARPERS FERRY
First Military Flintlock Dated “1819”
Here we present a U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1803 Flintlock Musket, manufactured in 1819 in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. While the Harpers Ferry Model 1795 became America’s first smoothbore, the Model 1803 became the country’s first standardized “rifle” design. The Model 1803 was adopted by both the Army and Marines, who appreciated the accuracy of this rifled model. This musket also took many aesthetic cues from Pennsylvania/Kentucky Long Rifles of the period with a graceful design, half-length stock and built in patch box. The rifle featured a brass trigger pull assembly and ring guard, along with a patch box that was embedded into the stock. The caliber was .54 with either a 33 or 36 inch barrel, depending on production batch which was of two major runs. Production spanned from 1803 through 1819 with a total of 19,726 units produced. The Model 1803 saw combat service in the War of 1812, and stood the test of time when it was featured once again in the Mexican-American War. Some even remained in play at the beginning of the American Civil War, when just about any firearm was placed into service due to shortages on both sides. Though it was never confirmed, and sources are in disagreement, many believed that the M1803 was featured in the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 through 1806.
This rifle remains in its original flintlock format. The lock is marked with the “US” shield on the “Eagle”/HARPERS FERRY/1819”. The left side of the barrel has US inspection markings of “US” in an oval and an eagle’s head. The left stock flat shows a faint cartouche. The bore has been widened to .60 caliber, making this a musket capable of shooting large ball ammunition or even buck and ball.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a gray-brown patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows signs of normal use and remains in very good condition. The bore is smooth and dusty and remains in good condition. The action is excellent. This is a scarce US musket that was witness to one of the most exciting periods in American history!
