The Model 1860 was designed to replace the Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, which was indeed heavier. The 1860 was in development prior to the American Civil War as evidenced by this rare example with an “1859” date. The federal government ordered 5,000 that year and, of that number, 1,200 were sent to the state of Virginia, just prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War. The ricasso is marked “U.S./G.G.S./1859” on one side and “AMES MFG. CO/CHICOPEE/MASS” on the other. This example is in near fine shape. The leather and wire wrapped handle is very much intact. Blade remains bright as protected by the scabbard. A very nice and quite rare early specimen of an 1860 Cavalry Saber that very well could have been used by Confederates! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
