BRITISH Antique Pattern 1853 CAVALRY SABER
Used in the Crimean War & American Civil War
Here we present an antique British Pattern 1853 Cavalry Saber, made circa the 1850s. This saber features a slight curve in the blade as it was made for both cut and thrust. Adopted in 1853, it saw relatively brief service, including in the Crimean War before another took its place in the early 1860s. It is estimated that half of the cavalry which participated in the “Charge of the Light Brigade” were armed with this pattern of saber. Many were sold to the Confederacy during the years of the American Civil War and are prized as such.
This saber’s grip has checkered leather slabs on either side of the tang. Iron hilt with two branches coming off the main D-guard. This is a fairly heavy saber with a short but action-packed service life!
This example is in very good condition. The blade remains semi-bright. No markings are found throughout. There is quite a stack of leather washers at the ricasso. Checkered, hard leather grips are in very good condition, secured by 5 rivets. Scabbard has a dark patina.
