Description:
These were produced 1903–08, in Japan, at the Imperial Japanese Army Arsenal at Tokyo (Kowisikawa). Knife bayonet for use on the 8 mm Siamese Mauser Type 45 rifle. The characters on the ricasso say "R.S. 121" in Siamese, which represents the year 1903 on the Gregorian (western) Calendar. "R.S. 121" is an abbreviation for Rattanakosin Sok 121. This refers to the 121st year of the Rattanakosin Era, which began with the founding of Bangkok in 1782. The bayonet was re-designated Type 45 when Siam adopted the Buddhist Calendar in 1913. Year 2445 corresponds to 1903.
Condition: Original condition. Blade is in excellent shape, bright and shiny, unsharpened, NO nicks, with usual scratches-handling marks, spot where the scabbard frog stud sets as it is commonly found. and light aging tiny spots mixed with even pleasing patina; the tip is intact. Ricasso with crisp marking. The pommel and cross hilt is bright with scratches-handling marks and aging toning spots with patina; the release button is in good working condition. "T-O" mortise slot. The wood handles are in great condition with NO cracks, NO chips, rivets and washers in good condition. Scabbard is in nice condition with a bit of dry grease mixed with patina, has one tiny dent towards the tip and another one on one of the edges. The scabbard throat has the 2 rivets in place; it is unique in having a depression that allows the scabbard to remain on the bayonet when fixed to the rifle. Scabbard fits the bayo nice and tight as it should.
A very nice example of a SIAMESE bayonet made in JAPAN will make a great addition to your collection!!
