Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique MANHATTAN NAVY .36 Cal Revolver

PROVENANCE Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto Berkeley CA

Here we present an antique Manhattan Navy Revolver, made circa 1863 in Newark, New Jersey. Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired. Quite obviously, this pistol is a direct and quality copy of the Colt 1851 Navy.

Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types.

The top of the barrel is marked “MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK, N.J. Patented March 8, 1864”.

Provenance: Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto was a restaurant located in Berkeley, California at 1919 4th Street. For 128 years, Spenger’s served some of the Bay’s finest seafood to generations of stevedores, students, Nobel laureates, and everyone in between. At its high point, the former fish market turned restaurant claimed to be selling 3,500 pounds of fresh fish per day. Spenger’s was home to oysters, a cheap bar, ship parts and a treasure chest of antique guns. Basically, the elder Spengers would buy guns from widows in the area whose husbands had been collectors before they died. So, after 128 years, Berkeley said good-by to Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto on October 24, 2018, and the cache of guns inside were released to be purchased by the public. This gun is one of those from the cache.

The overall condition is near fine. 75% of the original blued finish remains. The markings are clear. The cylinder scenes are quite clear. The numbers match. The grips show use yet remain in great shape. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a really nice Manhattan revolver from the Civil War period with some interesting provenance!
