Description:
For sale, a beautiful and rare Thompson Center Hawken Cougar percussion muzzleloader in excellent condition overall.  Cataloged and manufactured for only two years from 1986 to 1987, the Hawken Cougar was not a commercial success for the Thompson Center company because of the high retail price of the gun, despite the handsome looks and excellent fit and finish of the rifle.  The few that were produced are rarely offered for sale these days, and the examples that are for sale are typically well-used and not in excellent condition.  This particular rifle is serial number 1870, likely made in the first year of production in 1986.  This Cougar features a gloss blue finish on the 28" inch octagon barrel with adjustable iron sights, factory adjustable double-set triggers, a stainless steel lock, hammer, triggerguard, and stock hardware, and a beautiful factory gloss-finished deluxe Walnut stock.  The overall length of the rifle is 45.5" inches, and the length of pull is 14.25" inches from the front trigger to the stainless steel crescent buttplate.  This T/C Cougar is 100% original and has not been modified or altered in any way, it is exactly like it was the day it left the factory.  It has been fired a few times total at most since it was new and has obviously spent the vast majority of it's time in a safe or storage.  The factory blue finish rates 96%, with the only deductions coming from some tiny handling/storage marks on the barrel and one little spot of prior surface rust on the left side of the barrel 3" inches from the muzzle.  As you can see from the pictures, none of these deductions detract much from the clean overall look of the muzzleloader.  The stainless steel parts on this Cougar are all like-new except for the barrel wedge, which shows some dings from being tapped into place with a tight fit (these could possibly be polished out, or the wedge replaced if the new owner so chooses).  The bore is immaculate and bright.  There is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible, and the rifling is strong and sharp throughout the bore.  The factory stock on this T/C is in excellent condition overall and very beautiful.  The butt and forend both show some very attractive figure in them and lots of contrasting grain, much nicer than most regular production Thompson Center muzzleloaders.  The stock is free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage, and shows only some tiny handling/storage marks in the wood that are only visible under close inspection.  The original glossy stock finish is in excellent condition, the stock hardware is perfectly fit to the wood, and everything on the stock is nice and tight with no wiggle.  The original factory ramrod is still in place and in great shape with no damage, and the brass ramrod fittings are nice and tight to the wood.  Everything on this Hawken Cougar is in perfect working order, and we have no doubt that it would fire just as reliably and accurately today as the day it left the factory 33 years ago.  If you have been looking for something rare and unique to add to your modern percussion muzzleloader / gun collection, this beautiful all-original and vintage T/C Cougar would be the perfect choice.
