Description:
Antique J. HENRY & SON Half-Stock FRONTIER Rifle

.40 Caliber PLAINS Rifle!

Here we present an antique J. Henry & Son Plains Rifle, manufactured in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania circa the mid-19th Century. James Henry & Son were gunsmiths in a large family of gunsmiths in the 1800s. The Henry family worked as gunsmiths in Pennsylvania for nearly two hundred years. James Henry and his son Granville Henry were the first in the Henry family to produce percussion, rather than flintlock, arms. They supplied many “plains rifles”, i.e. half-stock percussion arms with thick walled octagonal barrels, for the western trade and then after the Civil War, they made breechloading rifles and shotguns.

This rifle was the kind used to take down game for the table or defend the homestead on the Frontier. It features a heavy, 38-3/4 in octagonal barrel bored for .40 caliber ball. The top of the barrel is marked “J. HENRY”. The lock is marked “GOLCHER”. The triggers are double set which provided a crisp break for precision shots.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in fair condition with a small repair at the wrist. The bore is in great shape with sharp rifling. The action on this rifle is strong. The set trigger needs to be activated first.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 38-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .40 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
