NY Antique J.G. SYMS .46 Caliber Target Pistol
Mid-19th Century Target Pistol with Single Set Trigger
Here we present an antique Percussion Target Pistol by J.G. Syms, made circa the 1850s in New York, New York. J. G. Syms was a gunmaker working out of his shop at 44 Chatham Street in New York. This type of pistol was popular during the mid-1800s, in the early years of the United States, as well as Europe. It would have been used primarily for target shooting competitions though it could be pressed into service as a defensive pistol.
It features a heavy octagon barrel with a slightly larger than .46 caliber bore. It is equipped with a single set trigger as well as adjustable target sights. The rear sight is an elevation adjustable peep while the front is a windage adjustable hooded post and dot. The top of the barrel is marked “J.G. SYMS” and his address “44 CHATHAM St N.Y.” The rest of the gun features a hand-checkered wooden stock and sturdy iron furniture.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are finished brown. The markings are clear. The stock is in good shape. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
