Description:
General Specs: Fox, Year 1918, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 5oz, Cyl/IC, LOP 14", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 1/2"
Serial Number: 353879

Ansley H. Fox got it right when he designed the Fox 16ga. on the 20ga. receiver.  Fox 16-gauge guns are invariably light and well balanced, much more so than other American makers of the day.  Parker made a few of their 16’s on the “O” frame that was designed for their 20ga. gun, but they are far and few between and you pay a large premium when you find one.  Most will agree the Fox Sterlingworth 16ga. is the best value for a small gauge American double gun in today's marketplace. This Fox, sn353879 made in 1918, is quite a find, as it has OUTSTANDING FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION, with 28” number 3 weight barrels retaining factory correct bore diameter, 98% factory blue, clear sharp lettering, minimum barrel wall thickness of 38 thousandths, and the chambers have been lengthened to 2 ¾” and the forcing cones tapered to a 1 ½” length.  Extending the chambers and forcing cones makes the gun shoot with less felt recoil by a very noticeable amount, and the gun patterns better as the transition from the chamber to the bore diameter is more gradual causing less deformed pellets which fly outside the pattern.  The action retains 60% factory case color, perfect screws, excellent mechanic, and crisp double triggers,  The stock maintains the original length of pull to the factory buttplate.  The flat top checkering is superb and is factory, and the wood to metal fit is tight.  The wood has better than average figure for a Sterlingworth and the finish is excellent with no major dings or marks.  This gun was made at one of the peak periods in the Philadelphia Fox gun company, as they were making money at that time.  You will notice this in the workmanship of the gun.  It is getting very difficult to find FACTORY ORIGINAL, UNTOUCHED PHILLY FOX GUNS WITH NICE CONDITION, and this is one of the better ones you will see offered for sale.  A lot of the  Sterlingworth guns you find have too much drop for the average gunner to shoot well, most with 3” of drop at heel.  THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL FIND AS IT HAS GREAT STOCK DIMENSIONS OF 14 X 2 5/8 X 1 ½ X NEUTRAL CAST.  It ready for the upcoming season’s upland game and clay targets.  The chokes are Cylinder/IC making for the ultimate grouse gun and upland gun for shooting over pointing dogs.  Fox guns like this are a great investment opportunity.  What a great find at 6 1/4lbs.  with 28” barrels!  Thanks for looking.
