Description:
These deluxe carbines (336 SC non RC) were the deluxe iteration if equipped with the semi beavertail checkered forend and checkered pistol grip. This one is a letter P ser # prefix which makes it a 1957 Date of Manufacture however it was likely a parts clean up from the same model just prior to 57. Starting in approx 1956 or 57 Marlin began to use the Bishop made or Bishop designed monte carlo (butt stock) on the Carbine version and on the deluxe rifle version the Bishop with both Monte Carlo Comb and raised cheek piece. This is the pre 56/57 style butt stock but has the correct checkering and correct (oversized) sling swivel stud front and back.
This is not in collector conditon but is stil a very nice and unique Marlin sought after and hard to find.
These were avail in 30 30 , 32 and 35 Rem, this one is 30 30. Equipped with factory Micro Groove rifleing and is of course JM marked. These sometimes had upgraded (meaning more highly figured wood than the std SC (non deluxe) carbine as this one does with uncommonly nicely figured wood on the butt end. We are rating this gun at 75% with some blotchy blue on barrel in places and some crud on the edges of the receiver and top of receiver.
Front site has been removed and missing to make room for scope clearance (these were factory drilled and tapped for scope) and the rear site elevator has also been removed and missing. Inexpensive import scope shown is included and seems to function ok but no value is being attributed to it.
The last ones of these rare guns we've had which were in higher conditon have sold in the vicinity of $ 1400 or more ....we are offering this one for approx half of that price. Bore is good. Marlins catalogue in 1957 described it partially as follows: "Deluxe Lever Action 2/3 tube. mage 7 shot avail in cals (described above) Expertly hand checkered at grip and forend. Finast quality Walnut .....New Breech Bolt for greater strengh, solid top receiver and low hammer spur for low scope mounting....."
Other than the look and nice and unique lines of the Deluxe Carbine these make a terrific deer rifle measuring only 38 1/2 " over all with factory 20" barrel
Because of the scarcity of the Deluxe (SD) Carbines, and the highly figured butt stock (pad added but stock has not been cut) it would make an excellent candidate for a reblue...add the commonly found front sigth and rear elevator and it would be a showpiece!
