Description:
SOLD ** KRIEGHOFF Trumpf Primus Drilling 16 x 16 x 8-57JR with 22 LR insert.
This is a rare version of the Trumpf Primus featuring the Krieghoff patented Hand-Detachable Trigger Group, built in 1936 in Suhl Germany. Cased, Excellent Plus –

Description:
Krieghoff (Sempert & Krieghoff) Drilling, 16 x 16 x 8-57JR, Suhl, made in 1936 with their Patented Hand Detachable Trigger Group, discontinued in 1947. Like the Neptun Primus made today, the butt plate opens to expose an original .22 Long Rifle insert barrel (engraved Sempert & Krieghoff) measuring 8.25” with its accompanying wrench to fit into a shotgun barrel to fire .22 Long Rifle.  This same compartment also conceals two 8-57JR cartridges. Another toe line trap door opens to reveal twelve 22 Long Rifle cartridges.

The barrels at .677” are 23 3/4" Rochling Elektro steel barrels with 2 ¾” chambers (Full and Full) and a rib extension for a Kersten-style crossbolt . The solid rib is fitted with original claw mounts with a rail mounted high-end German-made Jena scope in 4x.  (Holland & Holland fits rifles with Jena scopes). Rear sights consist of one folding and one standing leaves which are actuated with the rifle barrel selector on the top tang. The standing sight is cut to work with the shot barrels.

This is a Primus, built with all the bells and whistles of the Primus Neptun sidelock today, but in the Trumpf boxlock action. Besides the features already covered, the action is scalloped, not squared off, it is bolstered for extra strength, and the fences have side clips. It also has cocking indicators. The safety is a Greener-style manual safety. The top lever is checkered on both faces for either the right or left hand.

The trigger guard is horn as found only on the highest grade or best guns in German and Austrian drillings. The front trigger is a set trigger. Krieghoff patented the hand detachable trigger group with a rotating grip cap that secures a lever to remove the trigger group after unscrewing the lever forward of the trigger guard.

The barrels are blue, the top lever is blue, the barrel selector is blue, the trigger guard release lever and the trigger guard lever are blue and the two protruding Purdey action lugs are finished in blue.  All other metal parts are coin finished which is case hardening with the colors polished away.

The arabesque engraving is hand-engraved by a master engraver in the Trumpf Primus pattern of leaves and vines in full coverage on the receiver.  The Anson & Deeley forearm release and the cover for the bullet trap are engraved.  German engravers never sign their work, but on this one the engraver should have. Just look at the sharp detail and you can see that it is the work of a master engraver.

The cartridge trap in the bottom at the toe line holds 12 each 22 LR cartridges; the trapdoor buttplate holds the factory 22 LR insert barrel plus a wrench to secure it into the barrel, and two each 8x57R cartridges.

The stock has a Bavarian comb, not fluted, with Euro-pancake cheekpiece, and pistol grip with the patented rotating pistol grip cap as described above. The Caucasian walnut has a rich dark brown color showing interesting figure on the right and five tiny burls with some subtle streaking on the left.  The forearm wood matches extremely well as if cut from the same blank.

For the metal finish, the original barrel blue at 96% and the original frame’s coin finish is at 95%. The buttstock has been re-oiled but not sanded and remains at 99%. The original 26 lpi checkering is at 99% for both the forearm and the pistol grip. All three bores are excellent plus and look amazingly like new. It is hard to believe they were made in 1936. This is a solid Drilling that set around a whole lot more than it went hunting in the 82 years of its career. (There is plenty of Sellier & Bellot 8x57JR ammo that can be bought from a large array of distributors.)

The Length of Pull is 14 3/4" over the trapdoor buttplate. Weight is 7 lbs. 5 oz. without the scope and 8 lbs. 3 oz. with the scope.  The scope is still bright and clear with a German #4 reticle and is known as a top-of-the-line German-made scope.

The original maker’s case has been lost over the years, but the last owner commissioned the great German case maker, AKAH, to provide their premium leather case with Krieghoff leather label and custom fit the whole assembly in rich brown wool felt, making a very handsome presentation.

If you're a big-time rancher with a huge spread and can't get to the south pasture before sundown, this multipurpose shotgun, big game rifle plus the 22 long rifle, will certainly make your day.  No matter what critter you encounter, you will be prepared. Here is the ultimate gun for your 3/4-ton diesel ranch truck that can be a pleasure to shoot out of those large electric windows while sitting in air conditioning.
