Description:
Serial #49, .577/.450, 33 1/4" barrel with a very good bore that has some dark freckling within the grooves. This rifle has an 1888-dated, “VR" cypher frame, and has about 25-35% of the original blue remaining with the balance turned to an even, plum-brown patina, that has mild surface freckling, and pewter gray fading along the edges and projections. There is also some fading at the muzzle and on the sides of the barrel bands. The receiver has crisp markings on the right side: “(crown) / VR / BSA & M Co. / 1888 / (crown/arrow) / II"; with additional strengthened extractor mark on the top of the receiver: “S-X". Nepalese service marks are present on the left side of the barrel at the rear sight: “NS / NEP" (Native State / Nepal). The walnut buttstock and forend have numerous minor handling marks and blemishes in the armory reapplied oil finish, and the original Fort William Arsenal roundel, and Nepalese rack markings are still clearly legible on the right side of the butt. A correct iron ramrod is included, and an original 1887-dated “WD" marked saber bayonet is also included. The bayonet measures 23 1/2" overall, with an 18 1/4" straight, single-edged blade having short, single fullers. The blade and hilt fittings have an overall mottled, pewter gray patina with thin freckling throughout. The leather scabbard is in very good shape with the throat and chape matching the rest of the metal. This is a really handsome Martini-Henry outfit with clear Nepalese markings. Antique
