Description:
This is a seldom encountered and hard to find box of Winchester .40-72-300 Smokeless with the 300 grain Metal Patched bullets that was an early second offering for the smokeless cartridges. The two piece box is circa 1897-98 and features the wood cut of the round and lists the Model 1895 Rifle for which this caliber was created. The box has the “Winchester Smokeless" and “Soft Point Metal Patched Bullets" sunbursts. The box top is sound and the label is in very good condition with all of the original graphic intact and crisp with some edge wear and minor tears. The bottom section has two sunbursts with good crisp graphics and a somewhat soiled overall patina with sound side edges and the bottom detached on three edges where portions of the original paper is missing and has let go. The box contains 19 original rounds that are in excellent condition with the original “W" Winchester primers and “W.R.A. Co. 40-72 W.C.F." head stamp. A great box of hard to find cartridges that will display well.
