Description:
First built in 1917 during WW1 for British Military service by Enfield, this SMLE No.1 Mk.III* rifle ended up having a long and interesting service life thru World War 2 with Australia.  As long-time allies, the British supplied Australia with a number of SMLE rifles at the outbreak of WW2, among them a number of WW1 production guns like this one.  This rifle was taken by the Australian government and sent to their Lithgow small-arms factory in 1941 where it was refurbished before being issued for service in WW2.  During the war this rifle must have seen some combat and sustained damage, as it was sent back for repairs/reworking again in October of 1944, and then sent a third time just a month after the Japanese surrendered in October of 1945.  All of these re-work dates are stamped into the right side of the buttstock and are pictured.  This SMLE has a great combat-used look to it and is in very good condition overall.  The numbered bolt matches the reciever (Lithgow re-stamped), and the "D Broad Arrow D" Australian property stamp on the top of the receiver is crisp and clean.  The Lithgow-applied parkerizing is still intact on all of the metal parts, showing only some light wear you would expect to see on a battle-used rifle.  The import mark on this rifle is so lightly applied in tiny letters on the bottom right side of the clip-slot bridge it's almost invisible.  The bore is very good in this SMLE, with nice sharp rifling throughout the barrel.  The Australian stock set is in very good condition overall and very solid.  All of the Lithgow stamps are still intact and legible and all of the stock hardware is in place and in good shape.  All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order and the action is nice and smooth.  This Enfield should function just like it did during the World Wars.  If you have been looking for a really neat SMLE No.1 Mk.III* for your collection that likely saw combat in not only both World Wars but with two different countries, this Lithgow re-woked 1917 Enfield would be a great choice.
