The 29 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver that had far better knockdown power than any 357 Magnum chambered revolver. This is a “Dash-3” variation. This was the first variation of the 29 to feature a non-pinned barrel. Other features that come with this revolver include a 6-inch half-lug barrel, square butt frame, .500-inch serrated target trigger, .500-inch target hammer, red ramp front sight insert, and white outline on the rear sight blade. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The grips are traditional checkered wood and are quite beautiful. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “target stocks.” The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, implies this model 29 was manufactured around 1987. The Model 29 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. The .44 Magnum is a powerful cartridge, and many appreciate it for firepower to this day. It has been used effectively for defense against the dangerous animals, particularly the grizzly. It has even been used to disable a moving vehicle by putting a round through the car’s engine block on more than one occasion. This revolver is pre-owned, but the bore looks like it left the factory yesterday. There are very light powder burns at the front of the chambers. It has certainly been well cared for though it does exhibit a tiny amount of wear on the barrel. There are two very small spots of bluing loss towards the muzzle, one to either side. There is also a light scratch on the right side behind the “.44 Magnum”. One desirable aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a positive feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this. This revolver is in excellent condition and would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection.
