Description:
A very handsome and scarce Winchester Model 1895 sporting rifle, .30-40 (.30-40-US Krag) caliber with 23" (585mm) barrel. Serial number indicate production in 1931-32 which makes this rifle one of the last of the breed. This rifle was produced by Winchester for export, there was a worldwide demand for Winchester rifles and the ones produced after 1900 featured an extra barrel stamp in addition to their regular barrel markings, "MADE IN USA".

This Model 1895 was built in '.30 US', or 30-40-Krag caliber - a powerful high velocity cartridge of the period noted for being very accurate. The Win. 1895 was the only American sporting rifle built in quantity for this cartridge. Built as an export model in .30-40-Krag caliber it is most likely the rifle was intended for sale in a country where .30-40-Krag ammunition was popular, plentiful, and readily available. Since substiantial numbers  of Model 1895 Winchester carbines and rifles, cal.30-40-Krag, were used in the Mexican revolution, 1911-1922  and in other countries in Central and South America  during the 1920s it is logical to assume  this rifle was made for export to that part of the world. Lever action 'Model '95' high power rifles still had their devotees in the early 1930s, especially in the West and south of the Rio Grande.

This fine Model 1895 was customized early in its life; it was fitted with a Griffin & Howe type express front sight, a Redfield 'series 70' receiver sight (correct for the period and marked 'D' for Win. Mod.95), sling swivels, the buttstock and forearm were extensively checkered, and the stocks were given a deluxe varnish finish. The front end of the forearm has three small bone inlays in a trianglular design. This may be a crypto mark of the owner or custom gunsmith who worked on the rifle. The custom work is of excellent quality on a par with the best custom gunmakers of the period. Relatively few model 1895 Winchesters were customized. One can speculate the owner of this one had it customized to make it special. That it has been used but taken very good care of would bear this out.

CONDITION: The rifle is in excellent condition. Receiver and barrel retain 94% original blue with some slight high fading, slight edge wear, and some light handling marks. The bore is excellent and shiny, mechanical functions are excellent. The lever and magazine retain over 90% original blue with some slight aging and handling marks. The buttstock and forearm retain 95% period high polish finish with some light handling marks.

This is an exceptionally attractive Winchester Model 1895 and a most interesting example for the collector in that it was intended for export and customized in its period of use. It also handles very nicely and the .30-40-Krag is stiil a powerful and very accurate cartridge.
