Description:
Serial #8503, .577/.450 Martini-Henry, 21 1/4" barrel with a very good, bright bore that has a small amount of darker freckling within the grooves. This is an Enfield-made, 1879 dated carbine that has double arrow deaccession stamps and an overall lightly freckled plum-brown patina that has areas of mild pinprick pitting scattered about the surface. There is a large “(Broad Arrow) / SA / 326" South African service stamp on the right side of the frame. The walnut forend and buttstock have numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes scattered throughout the original varnish. The stock has clear and well-defined double arrow stamps, and “I" roundel on the right side. The swivels have an original white buff sling with double arrow and “WD" ink stamps, and the correct iron ramrod is still present. This is one of 5,001 Mk. I Artillery Carbines produced, and one of 850 handed over to South Africa following the 1879 Zulu War. It is probable that the carbine saw at least some service during the war, and is a fine example of a desirable South African Martini-Henry. Antique
