Description:
If you have been looking for a extremely clean and all-original example of the famous Springfield Trapdoor rifle, this Model 1884 made in 1889 would be an excellent choice.  This Springfield has not been altered or "improved" in any way, and retains all of the original parts and finishes.  As you can see from the pictures provided, the original factory gloss blue finish on all of metal parts is beautiful showing only some very minor wear from handling/storage, and the original case-coloring on the trapdoor/bolt is still bright and attractive.  The bore in this Springfield is exceptional, showing mirror-bright and clean with sharp rifling throughout the bore.  There is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections of any kind in the bore.  The original adjustable "Buffington" rear sight is in superb condition, with the windage and elevation adjustments all working smoothly by hand.  The original smooth American Walnut stock is in great shape overall.  It is free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  There are some scattered dings/dents/handling marks in the wood but nothing that takes too much away from the rifle's clean overall look.  The original U.S. inspector's cartouch is still visible and is dated 1889.  The original factory cleaning rod is still in place and in excellent condition, consistent with the rifle.  All of the controls on this Model 1884 Trapdoor are in perfect working order, and the trapdoor action locks up perfectly tight when in battery.  The hammer positively engages all three positions perfectly, the safety position, half cock, and full-cock.  The trigger breaks nicely with a relatively light pull and no slop.  We have no doubt that this Trapdoor would shoot just as reliably and accurately as the day it left the factory over 130 years ago.  This Springfiled Trapdoor would make an excellent addition to any collection, and while it is certainly a "collector grade" gun and worthy of display, it isn't so perfect that you would feel terrible shooting it with care.
