Description:
This is a very nice all-original example of the famous Spencer Model 1860 Carbine made during the American Civil War in 1864.  The Spencer 1860 Carbine was one of the most advanced weapons of the Civil War, and while originally designed as a cavalry weapon, was favored by cavalry and infantry alike.  The lever-action breach-loading repeater fires the .56-56 Spencer brass rimfire cartridge, and the tubular magazine in the buttstock holds 7 rounds.  This capacity and the rapid-fire ability of the Spencer Carbine gave whomever carried it a significant firepower advantage over their foes, who were likely armed with muzzle-loading single-shot muskets.  This particular example is serial number 58,135 making it's date of manufacture sometime during late 1864, as the serial range for military Spencers is 11,000 to 62,000 made between 1863 and 1865.  Due to the presence of a Stabler Magazine Cut-Off and 3-groove barrel, it very likely served in both the American Civil War and the Indian Wars.  After the Civil War ended the U.S. Military took the Spencer 1860 Carbines in inventory and had the guns modified with the addition of this Stabler cut-off device and a 3-groove barrel.  The Stabler cut-off allowed the carbine to be fired as a single shot while keeping the magazine "in reserve".  The 3-groove barrels were installed at this time as well, and while the modified guns were "officially" chambered for the new .56-52 cartridge which used a lighter weight bullet, they were able to fire the original .56-56 as well as the new .56-52 and .56-50 Spencer cartridges.  This Spencer is in very good condition overall and is in perfect working order.  As you can see from the pictures, it has a very attractive patina and all of the parts of the carbine show a uniform amount of age/wear.  The receiver which was factory case-colored when new, still shows some nice original colors in the protected areas with the action open, with the balance showing a gray/brown patina.  The bore in this Spencer is average to good.  The rifling is still visible throughout and the bore is still shiny, but it does have some pitting, mainly just ahead of the chamber.  The original factory iron sights are intact on this carbine and the original adjustable rear sight slide is still in place.  The original factory smooth Walnut stock set is in great shape on this Spencer.  Both the forearm and buttstock are solid and free from any major damage, cracks, or repairs.  The stock hardware is all in-place and in good condition, and the U.S. Inspector's cartouche is faint but still visible on the left side of the buttstock just behind the sling bar.  The buttstock is also marked with an "M" on the keel, likely a Spencer factory inspector's mark.  As mentioned earlier, this Spencer Carbine is fully functional, with all of the controls and action in perfect working order.  If you have been looking for a nice original Spencer 1860 Carbine here is your chance to get one that has lot of important history to it, having served-in or witnessed both the Civil War and the American Indian Wars.  Every antique American Military arms collection should have an example of this famous and groundbreaking carbine, and the unique and attractive looks of the gun make it an excellent decorator or display gun.
