Description:
Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1879 TRAPDOOR SR Carbine

The Original 45-70 GOVT, Made Circa 1885

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1885 by Springfield Armory. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.

This specimen is marked “U.S./MODEL/1878” on the breech block. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks.

The overall condition is very good. The steel parts bear a lot of original finish with a plum patina making up the balance. The markings are legible. The walnut stock has the thin crack that extends from the back of the lock and terminates about 5 inches back. Similarly, there is a repaired crack that extends from the tip of the forearm to the barrel band. Both are stable and the stock is smooth and solid otherwise. The bore is in very good condition, clean with nice rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.
