Description:
The Webley Mark VI in .455 Webley Mk II caliber entered service with the British armed forces on 24 May 1915 and it remained the standard British sidearm until officially replaced by the Enfield No. 2 Mk. I revolver in 1932. Fortunately, during the during the 1930s and going into World War 2, the Webley factory rebuilt many of the original Mk VI revolvers – replacing worn parts, refinish and the like. This proved to be a wise decision as the limited numbers available for the Enfield forced the British to reissue the Mk VI for service in World War II. Despite the British government’s insistence that the 200gr .38-caliber Mk IIz round had as much stopping power as the 262gr .455 Mk II round that preceded it, British troops found that the Enfield was no substitute for the firepower that the Mark VI could deliver. Retired for the final time in 1947, many of these revolvers were sold and many found their way into the U.S. Sadly, due to the then difficulty in finding .455 Webley ammo, many of these revolvers have had the back of the cylinder shaved off and the chambers re-bored to enable the use of .45 ACP ammo with moon clips. Fortunately, this is NOT the case here. This revolver remains chambered for the .455 Webley which is actually reproduced today by Fiocchi for those of you looking for loaded ammo. Interestingly, this revolver, likely performed by Webley during the 1930’s or WWII, has had the original cylinder replaced with that of another Mk VI, crossing out the original serial number on the new cylinder and stamping it with that of the present revolver’s serial number. The Mk VI retains its original finish and all of the factory markings and British acceptance stamps it has received over the years. The bore is in nice shape with no rust or pitting, only a small amount of lead fowling being present. This Mk VI would make an excellent shooter.
